Your two points on religion make me think of Stephen Colbert: At some interview on one show or another, he mentions that he has a profound sense of gratitude, and he feels compelled to direct that sense to somewhere (or Someone). Religion does that for him. Also, when he decided to explore Christianity again in his 20s, he started with the tradition he grew up with and knew best, Catholicism. The parallels jumped out to me.

The parallels makes sense with the caveat that my family was never observant so I'm not returning to religion but leaning into a long-simmering interest.

That's certainly a very important difference.

Yesterday as you know was the culmination of the sumo. I so wanted Kotonowaka to take the whole enchilada.

Turnofuji however I have to admit was the Yokozuna down to his chromosomes. He tossed Kirishima out like the trash, almost literally, and when it came to the championship play off with Kotonowaka, the poor Chiba boy just couldn’t budge the champ. A fabulous final match, a super human effort, though!!

It's still the day it ended here in Los Angeles and generally I'm still reveling over the marvelous last few days. The top guys showed off their skills down to the final playoff and I'm only sad that Hoshoryu had to withdraw early.

I wasn't so surprised by the Kirishima match since the Ozeki has never defeated Terunofuji, but the absolute domination! Kirishima had no chance. And to think, had he won enough matches, he would have likely been promoted to the top rank!

Lots of fantastic sumo ahead for us this year. Kotonowaka and Hoshoryu coming into their own. Oonosato's strong performance indicates a future in the top ranks. Hakuōhō making his way back up. Asanoyama injury-free. And many more. It's just too bad Takakeisho's future is still uncertain.
